We Shall Overcome

On Sunday 9th October we helped organise and sang at the wonderful Alternative Sunday Service at the Maze in Nottingham

This was a part of the national week long We Shall Overcome festival of music organised by the People's Assembly and hosted in Nottingham by Nottingham People's Assembly

Bread and Roses Theatre Collective performed their play about food banks

There was also a solo set by our very own Bronwyn Westacott, and a performance by Rosa's Lovely Daughters.

The Hope Community Gospel Choir gave a rousing performance, and we joined with them at the end of the afternoon for a moving rendition of We Shall Overcome

Gathering of Clarion choirs

On July the 9th and 10th a small group of us made our way to the Clarion House Cafe near Pendle in Lancashire - to join up with members of the Bolton, East Lancs and Birmingham Clarion Choirs.

Huge thanks to Moira and other members of the Bolton and East Lancs Clarion Choirs who organised the event. We had a great time and look forward to being invited back next year!

Clarion House is the last of a network of Clarion cafes that were a part of the once vibrant Clarion movement, started in the 1890's, bringing together cyclists and walkers celebrating the active outdoor life and working class culture while selling the Clarion newspaper and campaigning for socialism at the same time. For more background about Clarion House, see their website and this BBC coverage, there is more about the history of the Clarion movement here.

Nottingham Clarion Choir were named at our formation in the 1980's to recognise and honour this tradition

Street Choirs Festival 2016

We sang at this year's national Street Choirs Festival just down the road in Leicester.

Joining around 40 campaigning and community choirs from all over the UK we added our voices to a mass choir performance in the City Centre, and joined other choirs busking and filling the streets with song all around the City.

In the evening we laid into the government, austerity and corporate greed, channeling Queen, John Lennon and Holst to rock Curve theatre with our 2016 miscellany
